    Tony Cheetham obtained his D.Phil. at Oxford in 1971 and did post-doctoral work in the Materials Physics Division at Harwell. He joined the chemistry faculty at Oxford in 1974, and then moved to the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1991 to become Professor in the Materials Department. In 1992 he took up the Directorship of the newly-created Materials Research Laboratory, which he led for the first 12 years of its existence. He became the Director of the new-created International Center for Materials Research at UCSB in 2004, then in 2007 he moved to Cambridge to become the new Goldsmiths’ Professor of Materials Science.

    Professor Cheetham is a Fellow of the Royal Society (1994), the Indian Academy of Sciences, and several other academies, and has received numerous international awards for his work in the field of materials chemistry; these include a Chaire Blaise Pascal, Paris, (1997-9), the Somiya Award of the IUMRS (with C.N.R. Rao, 2004), and the Leverhulme Medal of the Royal Society (2008). Professor Cheetham is the chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of RAK-CAM.

    Joydeep Dutta obtained his Ph.D in 1990 from the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (Calcutta University), India In 1991 and 1992 he did Post Doctoral work at the Electrotechnical Laboratory (ETL, Japan) and at Ecole Polytechnique (France) before moving to Switzerland in 1993 where he was associated with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland until 2003 when he joined the faculty of the school of engineering at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Bangkok, Thailand.

    Dr. Dutta’s research interests include nanomaterials, self-organization, microelectronic devices, nanoparticles and its applications in electronics and biology. Dr. Dutta has co-authored three text books entitled “Introduction to Nanoscience” and “Fundamentals of Nanotechnology” and “Introduction to Nanoscience and Nanotechnology” (CRC Press of Taylor and Francis Group LLC), has over 150 research publications, 3 patents (5 ongoing applications) and has delivered over 60 invited and keynote lectures.

    Samy El-Shall obtained his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Cairo University in Egypt, and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry with Distinction from Georgetown University in 1986. He did postdoctoral research at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1986-1989. His research interests are in the general areas of molecular clusters, homogeneous, binary and ion-induced nucleation, gas phase and cluster polymerization, nanostructured materials, nanocatalysis, and photoluminescence properties of nanoparticles.

    He has published over 190 papers and book chapters in Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics, Materials Chemistry and Nanomaterials. Dr. El-Shall was awarded several US patents (7 issued, 4 pending) on the synthesis of nanoparticles, photoluminescence of silicon nanocrystals, magnetic intermetallic nanoparticles, nanoparticle catalysts, and nanoparticle additives for fuels and lubricants. In 1999, he was honored with the Outstanding Faculty Award of the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia (SCHEV), Virginia's highest faculty honor. He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of the Journal of Physical Chemistry and the Journal of Photoenergy. He is member of the US National Committee for the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry since 2005.
